Shining a light on a great event and idea! |
God bless the selfless acts of others, like Julie Luek from A Thought Grows. Julie was the first writing buddy I made when coming onto the cyberscene, and it’s been a treat to travel on this journey together. In her usual creative fashion, she took a worthwhile cause that’s all about giving back to one deserving fellow, and made it better with a way to give to many in the process. I’ve already seen where several of us have rsvp’d, “Yes,” but instead of merely attending and celebrating virtually, how about we also make our presence known on a tangible level?

Cheers, Alex |
Many of us follow the musings of Alex J. Cavanaugh, blogger extraordinaire and recipient of the upcoming roast given by David Powers King, Mark Koopman, and Morgan Shamy. It’s a great way to celebrate a man who has given his time, efforts, and endless energy to our writing community. Well…the idea is this…let’s move beyond the confines of our virtual writing community and into the real world, putting books in the hands of young readers. As Julie asks, “Wouldn’t it be great to take that same generous spirit and donate, in the name of the writing community (or Alex’s name!), just $5, to firstbook.org?” If all of us attending donate as little as five dollars, and get our followers to do the same, the upcoming blogfest will honor two great causes. I think donating in Alex’s name is a fantastic way to give him a nod and make a young reader happy.
If you haven’t heard of First Book, here’s a blurb from their website describing their accomplishments: “To date, First Book has distributed more than 90 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada. First Book is transforming the lives of children in need and elevating the quality of education by making new, high-quality books available on an ongoing basis.”

Say a WRITER donated today! |
A Donation of $5 buys 2 books!
“God bless us, everyone!”
Yay– I'm so excited that a bunch of kids could be getting books AND we're toasting (roasting) Alex. Really, does it get any better?
Saw that on Julie's site earlier – excellent idea! And I saw that roasting comment, Julie.
Alex and Julie…glad you stopped by. Yes…to get everyone who's roasting Alex to also stop by the site and make a donation and spread the word of First Book would be awesome. Writers putting books in the hands of readers…so natural.
What a neat cause! I'll have to check it out. 🙂
One day…maybe my books will be among those given! I'll definitely make sure of it. Thanks for checking them out and stopping by, Melissa.
Aloha ML,Nice job promoting a great cause (and a cause of great concern – Alex :)I'm pinching the button, too and will follow your lead in donating $5.Thanks also for the follow, and right back at you 🙂
