Spotlight On: Jessica Bell and Indiestructible

JessicaBell2I loosely follow a superb talent named Jessica Bell. By “loosely follow,” I mean I don’t frequent her blog and website as much as I’d like, but we see each other often and comment on Facebook and other social media. Come to think of it, I loosely follow many people, but that seems to be the only way I can accommodate everyone and everything I like. Works for me.

I also have and recommend two of the pocket guides from her Writing in a Nutshell Series: Show and Tell in a Nutshell, and Adverbs and Clichés in a Nutshell. Excellent advice written in plain and simple terms with spot-on examples. She’s definitely someone to watch in the publishing world!

But I’m not writing about her past accomplishments, of which there are many (did you realize she’s a contemporary fiction author, award-winning poet, singer, songwriter, guitarist and a former member of the indie band spAnk?), today I’m addressing the release of Indiestructible, an anthology of the experience of indie publishing by some of today’s hottest talents, compiled and edited by Jessica. Is there anything this woman can’t do? We’ve all been waiting for months with baited breath for this to come out.

From Jessica:

ONLY 99¢ TO HELP SUPPORT THE INDIE AUTHOR & AN AMAZING CHARITY!

by Jessica Bell

Indiestructible cover_finalThe day I realized I’d been obsessing over my sales figures way too much was the day I closed my eyes and tried to think about the real reason I am an indie author.

Is my primary goal to make money? No. So why do I keep obsessing over my sales stats? I realized it’s because more sales means more people reading my work. What I really really want is to be read. I want to share the one thing in this world I would cut my fingers off for. I know. If I didn’t have any fingers, I wouldn’t be able to physically write, but you know what I mean.

My passion for writing comes with a perpetual replacement button, attached to my side seam, just in case it becomes unraveled, and falls off, after a day gallivanting through the publishing jungle. It can be tough in there, but in the end, being an indie author is OH SO WORTH IT.

This made me wonder…what’s everybody else’s story?

Then Indiestructible was born.

Need motivation and inspiration to self-publish, or sign that contract with an interested small press? Have you done all the research you can, but still feel ambivalent about the idea? Indiestructible: Inspiring Stories from the Publishing Jungle brings you the experiences of 29 indie authors—their passions, their insights, their successes—to help you make the leap into indie publishing.

This is not a how-to guide. This is the best of the indie tradition of experienced authors paying forward what they’ve learned, giving you information to help you on your journey. The personal essays in this book will leave you itching to get your work into the hands of readers and experience, first-hand, all the rewards indie publishing has to offer.

Not only is this anthology packed full of interesting, unique, and genuinely helpful information, and totally worth the 99¢ (only 99¢!!!), 100% of proceeds will be donated to BUILDON.org, a movement which breaks the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education.

Pretty amazing, huh?

  1. Mike, I’ve seen this talked about on various sites, but not at this in-depth. Thanks for sharing. It sounds like a book that needs to be downloaded (sighhh IF I can part with .99!) 😉

    1. Thanks for supporting Jessica and the other indies, many of whom we know. I just parted with my last dollar getting it and will be begging on the streets tonight, “Please sir, one more bowl of porridge for a starving urchin.”

  2. Greetings Michael,

Not only am I impressed with Jessica, but I shall do my bit to help promote and a worthy cause always touches my heartstrings. Let’s see how much it is in British money.

Thank you and hope you had a peaceful weekend.

  3. Wonderful highlight, Swift! Jessica’s work and face looks familiar… I wonder if I follow her on twitter or something… must investigate.

And can’t wait for the anthology. Looks fabulous. 😀

  4. I’ve been meaning to get Jessica’s craft books and keep forgetting, this was a much needed reminder. And I’m so impressed by the Indiestructible roster! So many great writers involved in this project. 🙂

    1. Go buy those two books (and I think she’s working on another). They’re great little reference resources that you can flip to and find your answer in a moment.

The roster is quite impressive. Can’t wait to get into it. I’ve always wondered how it all happened for everyone.

  5. Mike! Thank you SO very much for that awesome introduction. Your support means the world. And gosh … who DOESN’T “loosely” follow nowadays? There are just too many brilliant folk I like to keep up to date on. You’re fabulous. Thanks again! xoxo

    1. You know I’m sometimes honest to a fault in my writing and take most words literally. “Follow” to me is reading every post, all the time (and some blogs I do).

“Semi-follow” is when I catch most of them, but not all of them, as much as I’d like to. Writer Unboxed falls in that category. LOVE the site, just can’t get to it every day and read the others I follow. And loosely follow means I follow on various sites, which actually works out GREAT. I seem to get to know the people much better that way. Just can’t read every blog, and if I see them elsewhere, that will have to do.

So when I wrote this, I used that term, but then I thought, “That sounds a little fickle,” so I had to back it up with your brilliance. Anyway, to say “I follow” someone I “loosely follow” sounds so phony. Kiss, kiss Hollywood stuff, and believe me, I’ve had experience with that.

Who knew I could complicate following and break it down to its minutiae? But that’s how this mind works.

You had it right…too many brilliant folks out there and I want a piece of each and every one. I’m a pig. 🙂

  6. I’ve read this before…but I can’t find my comment! Anyways…great idea for a book Jessica. It was nice that I recognized about half the names of the contributing authors! Wow. I’m hanging out with some impressive folks…I feel like an imposter sometimes…

  7. I’ve seen this book, and I’ve been loosely following Jessica too. But I didn’t know what the book involved or how multi-talented Jessica is. Thanks for the info and recommendation, Mike. It’s clearly a winner.

    1. Trying to find time to visit, read, and comment to everyone drove me batty. I love FB for the fact that I can see all the ones I can’t visit. And I usually get to know them better that way. Also, if people would post their new articles, I can link to them if interested.

      Thanks for coming by, Gwen!
